Just finished reading an excellent book (A Deep Dark Secret by Kimberla Lawson Roby). The topic of child abuse is explored throughout the fictional journey of the characters. It made me think and want to discuss the topic. Due to the fact that I have no friends...LOL...I am forced to have the discussion with myself (and the two of you that continue to read my blog...LOL).
Are we closing our eyes to the problem of child abuse? This book explored the sexual abuse of children. Are we having enough conversations with our children about the issue? As a culture, why do we tend to want to keep things/issues in the home quiet? Does this assist with the increase of abuse? What would you do if your child told you that someone was touching them? What if it was a family member?
As you can see, this book has me thinking. What about our sons? How do we help them understand that boys can be abused also? How do you have the conversation without having them not trust anyone? I want to ensure that my children would feel comfortable in telling me about the issue..but in reading...I began to feel that sometimes it is not so cut and dry as tell/not tell. The emotions that are involved seemed to be so complex and heavy.
Let me know what you think, feel, know, believe....

WOW!!! I have to get the book. . . Not really sure how to respond. . . I do talk to my children about those issues and yes, even with my son. He understands that abuse can happen to males~as well~and that you have to be alert to negative behavior/signs of abuse. Still, it's hard. Especially when you don't want them to let their guard up OR down against EVERYONE. I have to read this book. Thanks for the tip!
I need to check this book out too. This is a topic that's very near and dear to my heart.
